History

Pat Bashford was leader of the multiracial Centre Party in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) until it merged with the Rhodesia Party in 1977, when Bashford retired from politics. Bashford had emigrated from Britain to Zimbabwe (then Southern Rhodesia) in 1937, where he became a farmer. He was strongly opposed to Ian Smith's unilateral declaration of independence in 1965 and his racial policies.
