System of arrangement

The majority of this archive had been arranged and described by JRF Librarian Elizabeth Jackson in the 1990s. This included all available material relating to the housing function of the Trust and in particular New Earswick and did not reflect the division, after 1968, of the Joseph Rowntree Memorial Trust and the Joseph Rowntree Memorial Housing Trust which officially carried out all housing operations.

When re-listing and re-arranging the archive in 2018 the decision was made to leave as much of the archive as possible in its original form as the 'Joseph Rowntree Foundation Archive' and to avoid dividing files and series, but to separate certain complete series which reflected the work of the JRHT post 1968. These include the foundation of the Housing Trust itself, certain legal matters carried out in the name of the JRHT, and the modernisation of New Earswick which was initiated by the parent Trust but then carried forward and completed by the new Housing Trust. Future deposits concerning housing operations will be placed with the JRHT Archive (as appropriate).
