Frank Raymond Leavis was born in Cambridge in 1895. He read History and English at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and subsequently became a lecturer in the English Faculty there. He moved to Downing College, Cambridge , in 1931 and was elected Fellow in 1936. In 1965 he joined the University of York as a visiting Professor of English.
An influential literary critic, his publications included 'New Bearings in English Poetry' in 1932,'The Great Tradition' in 1948, and 'Nor Shall My Sword: Discourses on Pluralism, Compassion and Social Hope' in 1972.
This archive forms part of the University Library Manuscripts collection.

Manuscript text of lecture 'Pluralism, Compassion and Social Hope' given by F. R. Leavis at York, 1970. Written in Leavis' hand and signed by the author, on the reverse of photocopied pages from an unidentified edition of Jane Eyre, 36 numbered leaves.
