Scope and content

In 1902 the Retreat put its nurse training onto a more extended footing, with a four year course of practical training with lectures, leading to examinations. In the same year the Retreat began its Private Nursing Department (later the Trained Nurses Department, see RET 5/12 below), which supplied nurses for private psychiatric nursing in people’s homes: one of the reasons for introducing longer training was to produce a supply of nurses for the Department.
Also introduced in 1902 was the custom of regularly inviting a distinguished speaker to begin the annual courses of nurses’ lectures with a special talk to the nursing staff. The Addresses to Nursing Staff are the printed versions of these talks.
