History

Emma Antoinette Rowntree, known as Tonie, was born Emma Antoinette Seebohm in Hamberg, Germany, in 1846, the daughter of wool merchant, Wilhelm Seebohm. She met Quaker manufacturer Joseph Rowntree in 1866 when she was staying with her brother Frederic at Hitchin to learn English. The couple married on 14 November 1867 and Tonie converted to the Society of Friends. She was Joseph Rowntree’s second wife, his first being her cousin Julia Eliza Seebohm who died in 1863.

The couple settled at Top House on the corner of Bootham and St Mary’s, York, later moving to a larger house on the same street. Their first child, John Wilhelm, was born in 1868, followed by Agnes Julia in 1870, Benjamin Seebohm in 1871, John Stephenson in 1875, Oscar in 1879, and Winifred in 1884. In 1905 the family moved to Clifton Lodge on the outskirts of the city.

Emma Antoinette Rowntree died in 1924.
