History

John Stephenson Rowntree was born in York on 2 May 1834, the eldest son of Quaker grocer Joseph Rowntree and his wife Sarah Stephenson. He was educated at Bootham School before following his father into the family grocery business, in which job he remained until his retirement in 1892.

In 1858 he married Elizabeth Hotham, with whom he had nine children including Arnold Stephenson Rowntree, later a director of Rowntree & Co chocolate manufacturers. Elizabeth died in 1875 and John married Helen Doncaster three years later.

In 1859 he wrote the highly influential ‘Quakerism Past and Present’ in response to a public invitation for essays on the causes of the decline in the Society of Friends. His essay won first prize and many of its suggested reforms, such as the abolition of the practice of disowning members for marrying outside of the Society, and the need for a more active ministry, were later adopted.

Like many in his family he was a supporter of the adult school movement and particularly of the higher education of women. He was involved in the foundation of the Association for the Training of Women Teachers in 1870, together with Mount School superintendent Lydia Rous, and supported the establishment of a training department for women teachers at The Mount. He also succeeded his father as secretary to York Quaker Schools.

John Stephenson Rowntree died in London on 13 April 1907.
