History

Richard Rowntree was born in 1921, the son of Arnold Stephenson Rowntree and his wife Mary Katherine Harvey.

Like much of his family, Richard Rowntree was a member of the Society of Friends. He served in the Friends Ambulance Unit during the Second World War and also ran the Distressed Persons Scheme.

In 1947 he helped to found the Educational Interchange Council in Vienna. The council aimed to ‘promote and assist educational and cultural visits and exchanges’ between Britain and other European countries.

Rowntree was also a founder member of the North Yorkshire Historic Railway Trust and a County Councillor. He stood twice as a Liberal Member of Parliament.

In 1964 he became a director of the Joseph Rowntree Reform Trust, established in 1904 by his great-uncle Joseph Rowntree, founder of confectionary manufacturer Rowntree & Co. He remained in this post until 1994.

Richard Rowntree died in 1997.
