Archival history

Fragments in the category TAK/1, dating from 1000-1500, were purchased by Takamiya as a single lot from California Book Auction Galleries on 27 January 1980, lot 192. Originally a collection of 30 fragments, they were purchased by Takamiya as 29 fragments (missing number 29) and donated to the Centre for Medieval Studies as 28 fragments (missing number 23, a fragment of a Middle English Gilte Legende, from first half of the fifteenth century, which was placed on long-term deposit at the Beinecke Library of Yale University in the USA in 2013, along with all of the other Middle English manuscripts of Takamiya’s large collection).

The fragments probably originated in the vast collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872), from which Lionel and Philip Robinson purchased a large number of fragments and in the 1940s made up collections of specimen leaves illustrating various scripts through the centuries for sale to collectors. The set of 30 fragments purchased by Takamiya had previously been owned by Mrs Doheny of California.
