Scope and content
The Area Groups were originally introduced in 1971, following the rapid expansion of the Trust. Between 1971 and 1973 five groups were established, based on the Watsonian Vice Counties for biological recording, to cover the whole of Yorkshire. In 1974, the boundaries of the Groups were adjusted slightly to reflect the recently adjusted local authority boundaries and a sixth group was formed. The groups were volunteer committees with responsibility for conservation, education and public relations relating to the Trust sites within their respective region.
The files in this series contain the papers and minutes of each Area Group, including the North West Area Group 1971-1990; East Yorkshire Area Group 1968-1982; Mid-West Area Group 1971-1982; South West Area Group 1971-1973; West Yorkshire Area Group 1974-1984; South Yorkshire Area Group 1974-1986; North East Area Group 1972-1989 and Central Yorkshire Area Group 1976-1983.
